Saying the Name Jesus

Is There Such a Thing as Too Much?

I have a friend whose life story—his Jesus story—is changing dramatically.

It’s becoming more consuming. More present. More central. And recently, one of the tensions that often accompanies this kind of transformation surfaced in a very human way.

Is it wrong to want more Jesus than I had before?

Is it wrong to handle a difficult situation in Jesus’s way instead of my way?

Is it wrong to read the scriptures every day?

Could God’s words become mundane or unholy if you read them daily? Should scripture be limited so it doesn’t become “overused”?

Is it better to say the name of Jesus only once a day? Or can I say His name and think of Him fondly many times?

Can I call Him Lovely, Counselor, Prince, King Jesus, Mighty God, Jehovah, Elohim, Yahweh?

Doesn’t the Spirit teach that God is everything good— everything lovely and praiseworthy?

At lunch, a loved one shared honestly—as she should. She said that attributing artistic works to “Jesus and Andy” felt, to her, almost like taking the Lord’s name in vain.

I could tell she was bothered, but she expressed her concern calmly and directly.

In that moment, I wondered what Jesus would say. And so I responded honestly.

Saying “Jesus.”
Thinking of Jesus more often.
Feeling that He is with me—always.

I also said that I believe it’s best to follow your own belief, and to honor the conscience God has given you.

Afterward, Dad and I talked. He reminded me there is nothing wrong with being corrected— that humility and teachability are virtues.

We also recognized how good it is to share grievances quickly and honestly. It gives space for reflection, for softening, and for truth to surface without ego taking over.

I felt the Spirit prompt me to notice the good in that moment. Many people right now are holding new ideas alongside deeply cherished traditions.

Rather than allowing those tensions to divide families, this feels like a time to be humble, teachable, and willing to learn from one another.

I do not believe God is threatened by new tools, new language, or even new mediums. He is woven through everything that is good, lovely, and praiseworthy—even here.

If this reflection does anything, I hope it simply points to the possibility that truth, love, and unity can still grow— even in honest disagreement.
